Virus, I think they fixed it so you can't get Mareep until after the first gym. Even so, you can catch yourself a Geodude or Onix and he won't be doing much damage to you. Or get a Ghastly, use Hypnosis on everything and swap for your starter once they're asleep.
The Elite Four are fairly easily beaten, Will falls to a combo of fire and electric attacks, providing that you don't have a dark type in your party. I didn't, and my Typhlosion and Ampharos took him down easily. Koga was beaten in a similar fashion, Typhlosion took down everything except for his Crobat, Ampharos one shot that, and Lugia got his Muk. Bruno, all you need is a flying or psychic type, so Lugia is perfect if you're playing Silver. Or an Alakazam, or Espeon or whatever you've got. Karen can be tricky, I plowed through with pure power, my Typhlosion's special stat is hax. Her Houndoom is the most dangerous, anticipate the swap and bring out a water type right away because if it uses Nasty Plot once or twice to raise its special attack it'll one shot most anything on your team. Lance isn't so bad. He starts with Gyrados, so fry him with electricity and then switch to an ice type because he'll send out 3 Dragonite next most likely. Each Dragonite has a different moveset, one will have dragon and water attacks, another knows Thunder and I believe the last knows Fire Blast. Then he's got a Charizard and Aerodactil, at which point my Feraligatr was finally worn out and beaten, and Ampharos mopped up.

those are just miagrate jobs from previous versions
as for taking Lance down, some decent suggestions, and i'll add one: if you were sensible, you'll have either Ho-Oh or Lugia. now, as far as i'm aware, both can learn Dragon Pulse. this is extreemly effective, as you can just keep using it to take down all his dragon types, and then use a water type to take Areodactyl down (if you got Lugia then no worries). Victory like this is stuidly easy, just carry a ether with you, it may be needed

I actually didn't have too much trouble ,but I took mention of Muk and Houndoom seriously. So I had my Kingler and Typhlosion say goodnight to the both of them well here was my team if you all were wondering.
Typhlosion Lv 61: My boy wiped out a good portion of Koga and took down Lance's Charizard like no ones buisness. Pidgeot Lv 55: I was little dissapointed in him ,but he came through in certain fights mostly with bruno's fighting types. Golem Lv 55: I didn't use him much ,but if I need a quick sub with lot of defense he made it through took down Koga's Crobat and survived with one hit against Lance's Dragonite with water abillities. Togetic Lv 55: My second back up though not at all useful liked I hope ,but he's still with me in Kanto. Kingler Lv 55: Perfect for Houndoom with one surf he oblitered satan's pooche also knocked out Lance's Aerodactyl Dragonite Lv 57: The wait was worth not evolving Dratini intill I learned all the moves in one go. Outrage destroyed most of Lance's dragonite squadron like no one's buisness.
This was my team I didn't want to play with legendaries in these bouts I wanted good old fashion standard el mano y mano. Yeah the lvls I took the time like I said to make them overpower the elite 4. Thanks for all your advice I appreciate that. My team has a few flaws ,but overall I made it look like cake. Now in Kanto and just moped up Lt. Surge with my Golem.

Wow, your guys are at at the level mine are and I'm almost done with Kanto. You must have spent a lot of time grinding.
Also, I noticed that 5 out of your six Pokemon have a weakness to water/ice. If you came up against a powerful water type, with the speed to attack first and the special attack to one shot you then they could theoretically murder you with one Pokemon. Especially if it were a Starmie or something that knew Thunder, could take out Kingler as well. I'm just curious how this team is working out for you, you seem to have a couple Pokemon that can preform the same function and very few options for compensating for your weakness.

actually, mine are as follows (this was from the league upgraded after beating Red) Typhlosion Lv. 83: he did almost all the work up until Lance, where he took down Lance's Gyarados and Salamance Lugia Lv. 51: key in finishing Lance and his other new pokémon, Kingdra, Areodactyl, Dragonite and the other one (can't remember name) Ho-Oh Lv. 71: a good backup, didn't let me down when Typhlosion went down with Lance Noctowl Lv. 7: just tagged along realy (Red) Gyarados Lv. 30: i don't know why, i had better Sudowoodo Lv. 38: was in training so i could capture Raikou and Entei, so was in it for the experiance Now, if i'd pull it, i'd use: Charizard Lv. 100 Typhlosion Lv. 88 Blaziken Lv. 77 Ho-Oh Lv. 72 Sceptile Lv. 59 Lugia Lv. 51 i'm training a Squirtle up to add to the team (Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander can be gained after defeating Red on Mt. Silver's summet, be prepared for the hardest fight ever: Pickachu Lv. 88 Snorlax Lv. 83 Lapras Lv. 82 Charizard Lv. 84 Venasaur Lv. 84 Blastoise Lv. 84 once you win, talk to professer Oak, he'll let you choose one) I'm also training my own Treecko (same as before, no need to repeat it, go to Silph head office, go to the counter. Steven Stone (Hoenn champion) will be stading there. he'll give you a Hoenn starter (Torchic, Mudkip or Treecko)) both gains can only be done once, so choose wisely to match your Jhoto stater Oh yeah, Vile, for a Syther, just go for the bug catching contest on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, you can catch one then. Hericross though is still a miagrate job (i think, some bug pokémon from other regions have shown up, Hericross might too.... must check, i'll confirm when i know) and Venimoth comes around Lv. 40/35 one or the other (don't use bug pokémon asides Syther)

Heracross is in both games, surf east after the town with the 4th gym and cut down a tree. You can get some apricorns here, and Heracross is in the trees around you, you just need to headbutt him down.

Remember now by the 4th generation of pokemon games including the remakes currently. A lot of the pokemon have other moves that don't naturally correspond to the type or dual type plus the specail abillities they have on really changes the strategy around a lot. Though the one thing I lack really is I rely purely on unaltered movesets with the exception of HM's. My pokemon especailly my Golem and Kingler lack speed ,but they make up for it for their mad defense. My Pidgeot is all speed hax ,but was proved terrible in certain situations ,but made up for them at the right time and place. My Typhlosion and Dragonite are very well rounded ,but sport a very potent level of attack. My Togetic served as my back up and distraction. So I had to adjust and plan things out.

The new features didn't get in my way so much, aside from Togetic/togekiss and its "hustle" ability. Hustle ups attack, but reduces accuracy, which is pointles cuz one-- his attack sucks. two--all his attacks are special.
For other stats that were lacking, I simply used those stat drinks. My Typhlosion's already high special attack is even high enough so that if I really wanted to, I could've one-shot the entire E4 when I went at them for the final time.

Gah! Cannot beat Lance on hard mode... got through the other four just fine but his are about 15 levels higher than them. I'm just going to have to grind the first four and keep blacking out till I get strong enough to beat him... or maybe I'll take a detour and get Articuno to help me. I can get him at this point right?

Though I don't use them. if you need it for a bit I can let you.

mind if i refresh my team? Typhlosion hit 100 a while back, and i got a Vulpix at 50 for a Battle Tower team, working on Dratini for it too. And does anyone know where to get a Pinco? i want to get one, and evolve it so i can trade one for Steven's Beldum.

For Pineco you headbutt trees for them to pop out. I'm not to sure if they are version exclusive though. For headbutt you get it from the guy in Ilex Forest unless you have a pokemon with the move headbutt.
