All hail the mighty wikipedia right? The virus is basically un named when it gets implanted into Zero. The maverick virus was a term the people of 21xx used. I beat the first three as a kid, then beat the next three just recently, when the story was actually in better detail.I haven't done 7 or 8, but I've watched a friend play.

Whos not to say your memory could be messed up, I recently beat all 8 games. Plenty of times when I was younger too. I remember more than you. Go replay all 8 games.

The Zero Virus was the first virus and was put into Zero during creation.

When Sigma kicked Zero's , the virus was released but was watered down to create the Maverick Virus.

The Maverick Virus fused with Sigma's programming, thus making the Sigma Virus, which was STILL a watered down version of the Zero Virus.

The Colony Virus fuses with the Sigma Virus, which reverts it back into the Zero Virus.

Now can we move on?

...How does that happen? Sigma kicks Zero's and the Maverick virus some how gets watered down, goes into Sigma, adapts, and then becomes the Sigma virus?

No we can't, because the Zero virus didn't REVERT back to what it was. The Zero virus was just recently created from the eurassia incident, and that makes it A DIFFERENT VIRUS. Jesus christ..

Exactly. Crushing Zero's head gem released the virus from Zero, but since the virus wasn't inside of Zero anymore, the virus became weaker. It finds the nearest host body, Sigma. It adapts to Sigma, thus making the Sigma Virus.
