I recommend you to use PNG format for avatars (Mostly sprites), unless they're photos, if so, use JPG
How to add an Avatar
Go to an image host, like www.imageshack.us or www.photobucket.com
and upload it. Then copy the Direct URL and paste it on your Avatar place in your profile. (You must set the size of the avatar in the Width and Height places, it's usually 100x100).
How to add an Image into your Signature or post
Do the above but instead paste the link in between![]()
's on your Signature place obviously.
Should look like

OR
On normal posts, to add images, click on the button with a picture. That will create the tags itself.

Like above but with a slightly more complicated formula
