I thought Zero had it in X1, and just didn't use it. Maybe it's on him... I'd have to look at his sprites.

EDIT: Zero has no sword, but I noticed something else.
He doesn't have any boob globes on him with his X1 sprites. Has anyone else noticed this?

Besides, he could have made another thread for that poll.

How he got it is un-spoken of, but he started getting around to it on the second game, then started training with it on the third. He mastered it from then on.

I played X3 before. The Z saber was nearly worthless. You could only just wave it, but you had to CHARGE..
Only in X4 onwards, it became better. I think.

...yeap....he was training. He's not like X where he could master certain programs and patterns in a snap ya know.(The moves he learned in the later X games pretty much come from watching and learning from his enemies.

plus, the saber served as a,....well, the saber came to zero as a machine gun came to a knight: its just a powerful extra suprise.

Zero has light globes in X1, but the saber has been given in X2.

Dr. Cain gave Zero the saber after he was rebuilt in X2. Remember when he comes into the room and kills Sigma's black copy Zero in 3 hits? 2 buster shots and a swordbeam? And he can't have taken Sigma's sword in X1, Zero was dead at the time Sigma was defeated. So Cain must have given it to him.

Canonically (and from the Megaman Wiki + Wikipedia and other MM sources):
X-Series Zero was originally meant to have a saber but Wily was too busy getting killed (but not killed -_-) to give him one. Canonically the X-Hunters from MMX2 rebuilt him (with mysterious specs that THEY found but noone else could) and completed his body by adding the shoulder-plates, unrepresented body upgrades and his trademark Z-Saber. He still has the Z-Saber until his (false) death in X5, where X takes it. While it isn't canonically explained I believe X returned Zero's Saber to him in X6, since absolutely nothing changes save for Zero's basic 3 Slash. My best explanation for the new combo is Capcom finally wanted either A) A brand new version of Zero for his 'second coming' or B) They got bored or the crazy option C) They thought that his Z-Saber reach was too good for a character that was meant to fight in close (playing through X5 I realized that it's 'exploitable' in many different ways ^_^).

In MMZ as previously stated Cyber X gives him his original Z-Saber. Now at this point even I would say 'that **** X stole his Saber and was only kind enough to return it too him 100 YEARS LATER'. But of course, you can't miscount the fact that Omega ALSO had a Z-Saber (at the conclusion of the MMZ series) that HE used as 'the original Zero'. So either Zero's pink ultimate saber (I've REALLY forgotten where when and why he gets a different colored saber in the X series).

But as far as I know, In X6 X returns Zero's Saber, which is (and this in itself is a shoddy answer) why you can't switch between characters during a stage.

But.. to my *educated* knowledge of it: MMX Z-Saber = MMZ Z-Saber. Omega's Saber could possibly be Zero's upgraded/'ultimate' Saber that he lost due to retardation.
