If they would give it a MMX style gameplay it wouldn't be considered an MM game.

you know character switch and sharing abilities thats all, and don't forget the series has to lead to the X series sooner or later

Yeah, I'd like for them to lead the original series into the X series and once and for all explain what happened to megaman, bass, protoman, roll and the rest... but atleast for now it seems highly unlikely it will ever happen.
but remember protoman appears as a playable character in Megaman: Powered Up. So you do get to play as him some... just not right from the start in his own game...
