Protoman had a defect, it shows in his ending movie and that arcade game, he is seen talking with Dr. light who wants Protoman to come home, but Protoman refuses blahblahblahblah. And eventually they tell about protomans error...

And no, Cain and light are not related. Light doesn't even know about Cain, Cain merely found X and Lights notes.

Maybe Wily told zero to kill Protoman first, as practise or something, and when he did, the virus got transfered to Zero.

This is turning into a discusion like "what killed the dinosaurs." Here are all of the ideas so far:

1. Zero killed all, period.
2. Zero killed Protoman, who gave a virus to Zero, that killed everyone.
3. Bass killed everyone

um mega and protoman are robots right? maybe they rusted out. or protomans defect, which allows him to tap into ALL of his energy, went bezerk and protoman became a nuke wannabe? if you play MM&B, you will find out that Proto can use all of his energy in something he likes to call: BIG BANG SHOT!!!!1!!!one!! any way i think bass was killed, wily died on the john, and megaman and friends have a party. Protoman goes nucular, killing them all, AFTER X was completed. and thats all i can think...huh, protoman should of got megaman a few baseball tickets, not a walking talking bomb.

Zero is still superior to most robots to this day so he could have easily taken down all the people from classic.

Here's my take on the subject. Say there was a conclusion to the Megaman Classic series, here's how Capcom would probably have done it:

You choose Megaman or Bass to play as, and if you choose Megaman, the final boss is Wily. If you choose Bass, you fight Zero (I was thinking one day about this X-D). Of course, you would defeat Wily as Megaman and he woud run off and hide somewhere and turn himself into a reploid (wouldn't see this though), and as Bass, once you got to Zero, Protoman would try to kill him and get pwned, so Bass has a go at it and you would win. After that, Zero reveals his true power and f**** Bass up really bad. He eventually dies, but I never went too far into that.

Back to Megaman, once you beat Wily, Dr. Light calls him back to his lab, where Zero eventually arrives and destroys everything (if you read the manual for the original MMX (i actually remember this from 13 years ago) Dr. Light's lab was found underground with mostly everything destroyed). After this, Zero does something that puts him in hibernation for a century or so (probably an upgrade from Wily since Bass managed to damage him), and after he awakens and goes crazy, that's where the cutscene from X4 where Sigma fights him comes into play.

Anyways, the Maverick Virus was mentioned by Wily in the second arcade game in Bass's ending as his 'other project' that he planned to combine with Zero, so there ya go, instant Cataclysm!
