Dare I say Zelda is overrated and overhyped? Well, that's being a bit harsh, most Zelda games are good..
Let's just put it this way then. If Zelda is casual, then Ys is hardcore. Literally.
The series isn't well known because it's been pretty isolated in Japan with few to no releases in the US. However, it has a very strong cult following which originated fan-translations. (Only 2 games aren't translated yet, but they're active projects)
Luckily, XSEED is currently translating and officially bringing the excellent series abroad, and they're doing a pretty good job. (If Felghana PSP sells well, they say they'll continue doing it)
---- As for the games themselves:
Ys is an action-RPG like Zelda, starting only a year after the latter. (Zelda began in 1986. Ys in '87)
The series is well known for being VERY hard on higher difficulties and for having probably the best video game music I've heard. (And I like Touhou) I will bet at least 50% of you who read this post has heard an Ys song.
Ys has always kept itself classic (No gimmicky spirit trains D:<), and it's becoming very popular because Zelda will keep itself aimed as a game for kids, while Ys is a game for a more older audience.
Ys VII is coming out on the US on August 17th I believe
Have some trailers:

Sounds nice ,but I'll always be a kid at heart. This also sounds cool this Y's you call it ,but thank you for being respectful about it Mr. Raikon. I stopped playing Zelda after they got into the stylus which to me screwed up the controls. I just can't run a stylus all that well and drives me nuts they can't think of anything else when Zelda was once a little more dedicated to an older crowd of course that older crowd were those kids who played the games back then. I also didn't get into Zelda till about the GBC era.
