The latest Zelda game, Spirit Tracks, shows that Hyrule's technology is advancing. Not only are there trains, but also electricity and an advanced Pictograph Box (The Zelda equivalent of a camera. There was one in Majora's Mask that could only have one pic at a time).
Now this gives one the impression that it's possible a future Zelda game could be set in time periods resembling ones besides generic medieval Britain.
Do you believe it's the medieval setting that gives the Zelda mythos it's charm, or are you of the opinion that a Hyrule with a constantly evolving culture and society would be realistic and interesting?
Personally, I'd probably love it, especially if it means we could get a descendant of Malon teaming up with Link, but I'm wondering what you guys think.
(In case you can't tell yet, I'm a hard-core Malon fanboy. She probably got the most characterization in the entire game in Ocarina Of Time, and yet after getting two alternate dimensional equivalents in Majora's Mask, we never saw her again. And no, I don't count her Minish Cap appearance, because you could remove it from the game and it would make no difference.)

For me, as long as its a guy in a in green using a weapon made from the gods to destroy a powerful-but-corrupt man before he steals the power of gods with the help of a random hot financially wealthy chick, It's a zelda game.
This means that if they decided to make link this guy in an extra large green jersey and a green baseball cap, have him use some sort of lightsaber created by gods and a motorcycle(that mysteriously speeds up when you hold a carrot in front of the headlights) fighting against so mafia godfather guy with the help of some figurehead princess of some well-known country, it would still be a Zelda game I'd love to play.
Also, The picto-box was in Wind Waker as well, holding up to three photos. Giving pictures of certain things to a certain person would have him make figurines of things in the said photo. (like enemies or bosses or the various people you meet.)
...now that that's outta the way, where the hell's my cheeseburger...?

I'd be willing to try the Zelda-esque dungeon formula in a different game with more modern gadgets, but I wouldn't want it to be Zelda then. Zelda has to much magic to translate into modern age stuff anyway. And when I think about Link trading in his bow for a pair of pistols, Epona for a motor bike or something like that... its not right. So I'd be willing to try a game like Zelda that had dungeons similar to Zelda and mechanics like Zelda if it wasn't Zelda.

Good point about the magic, and I would also hate to see Link shooting guns, but consider this: the conflict of the Zelda series is mostly religious (A fictional religion, but the conflict is religious in nature nontheless), with Ganny, Link and Zelda being somewhat representative of the three goddesses. So even if the series went modern or even sci-fi, the magic would still be there. Link would still have an obsessive compulsive disorder ofdoing favors for people. Ganny would still be an evil bastard, possibly with an Irish or Scottish accent at some point, and Zelda might still be a shallow stock character.

Personally I could see Zelda set in the future one day, as: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ( Arthur Clark.) I mean I can imagine some of Link's equipment being made with advanced tech fairly easily... EX: Zora Tunic - An advanced dive suit that uses a set of gills to pull oxygen out of the water, then stores it in pockets for the user. The front of the tunic has a small hose and mouthpiece to feed the oxygen to the user. Goron Tunic - Featues extremely powerful cooling system to prevent the user from overheating in extremely hot environments. The types of arrows... Fire arrow - arrow with tip soaked in kerosene, and the head of the arrow is a strike anywhere match. Ice arrow - Arrow with a capsule of LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) that breaks on contact. Light Arrow - A special grenade like attachment that upon impact emits high levels of UV light that both burn and blind anything struck by it. Bomb Arrow - C4 + primer on the tip, when it hits it explodes. As for Epona, as stated before... Motorcycle. With an advanced Nitrous system, oddly shaped like a carrot. (Steals excess Nitrous from the air to fuel it, but it takes time to gather sufficent fuel for a boost.) And as for some of the character: Malon, a fairly gentle woman who owns a motorcycle repair shop. She was the one who created the Epona motorcycle. And she named it after her great-great-great ancestor's horse of legend. Ganon - Leader of an unruly motorcycle gang... That inhabits the Geruda Alley section of the city. Zelda - Mayor's daughter. Link - recently moved to the city after living with his uncle. Seeks adventure in the big city.

I wouldn't mine some advancement ,but to me a Zelda game should always be a Zelda game with its medieval flair. Too me it just wouldn't feel right. I didn't mind sailing and then came trains which I don't have problem with either so at this rate some advancement per game is good end of story.

The kiddish Zelda games are for smaller kids. They don't care about these details, they probably even get excited about the train thing.
The realistic-looking Zelda games... I don't see it getting any technology, keeping the magic properties. If there'll be a train, it'll probably be a ghost train, literally .... hopefully.

I think a mix of past and present would be cool. For example, the magic and fairies and whatnot would remain a staple, but they could meld with the tech, and there'd be some way to integrate the justifiable use of a horse. I dunno everybody else's opinion on this, but I like that kind of setting.
Actually, some sort of post-apocalyptic theme would be awesome. It holds the medievel political system of territories, and offers some interesting explanations for different set-ups. Gerudo could be the motorcycle bandits that steal the "princess," the daughter of whatever high-profile figure, and a boy raised in her territory steps up to rescue her. Along the way he meets Zora, a hyper-evolved race of amphibians, and the Goron, a too-hyper-evolved race of mountain-dwelling simpletons. Along the way, you would find ruins of ancient wells (fairy springs) and half-old-half-new dungeons and such. I'm sure good ol' Miyamoto can thresh out the details much better than I can, but like I said, I've always been a fan of that sort of stuff.
