Ok guys, here's the deal. I'm currently setting up a creative arts tournament to be hosted on DeviantArt and to some extent, here. I'm laying the ground work now so that by the start of February everything will be ready to go.
This tournament is based around weapons. The character you use doesn't matter. All that matters is the weapon. Your weapon determines your characters traits, abilities, and other such defining qualities. Here are the full set of rules (Although this is only the first draft and may seem a little sloppy...)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[you]Concept[/you]
This is a creative arts tournament. For each round of the tournament the participants will submit a short story, a hand drawn comic, a sprite comic, or a short flash. The submitted media will feature the maker’s character winning a fight against his/her opponent for the given round. For each pairing in the round, judges will decide which of the two submissions is better and the selected entry is declared the winner of the battle.
[you]Details[/you]
For this tournament, your chosen character doesn’t matter. Each participant will choose a weapon from a set created specifically for this tournament. The weapons will consist of those inspired by popular media, such as Cloud’s Buster Sword, and those created from scratch, like a halberd centered on cherry blossoms. Whatever weapon is chosen will determine how your character fights, what kind of element is used, and what special attacks and techniques can be preformed. Here is an example of one of the weapons that can be chosen.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: Excalibur
Traits: Sword and Shield fighting style
Close-quarters combat specialist
All attacks Light based
Element: Light
[you]Abilities[/you]
Diamond Shell: Creates a diamond shaped barrier around the user to repel damage
Shining Swords: Creates swords of light that hang in the air and stop your opponent’s movements for a limited time.
Providence: The user slashes the air, creating four balls of light that home in on the opponent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Traits determine how your character will fight and behave in battle. This weapon, the legendary Excalibur, focuses on holy attacks and fights best in extremely close quarters. The Abilities listed are the special techniques your character can use. They may be used as often as you wish. Although the sword itself is pretty generic, some might recognize the Shining Swords technique as being similar to the Yu-gi-oh card “Swords of Revealing Light”. Such similarities, across many series, will be common amongst the weapons up for selection. The element of the weapon mainly plays a role in what the weapons strengths and weaknesses are. Also of note, unless the technique specifies otherwise, all Abilities draw from that element. However, unless stated, as is the case with Excalibur, all regular attacks made with the weapon have no element.
Weapons will level up after every victory. Although all of the weapons in the tournament start out with three Abilities they can obtain up to six (after winning three battles). As a special bonus, after the fourth victory, the user may choose one unlocked ability from any of the opponents they have defeated to be added to their own weapon. Here is a preview of Excalibur’s unlockable Abilities.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Divine Ray: A huge beam of light shot from the tip of the blade.
Strike Wave: Sends out five vertical waves of energy in a fanned pattern, leaving an etching in the ground
Final Gate: The sword traces a circle pattern in the air, causing a gate to materialize. The gate opens and draws the enemy in. It then closes and dissipates, leaving no trace of it’s victim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[you]Judging[/you]
Since the difference in quality between a sprite comic and a hand drawn comic is arguably vast in most cases, entries will be judged very little by the media chosen. The categories for judging are as follows.
Effort: This category is based on the perceived amount of effort put into the entry. If your comic entry is badly drawn stick figures, chances are your score will go down. Even if your artistic ability is limited to stickmen, at least make them well-drawn stick figures. Examples of bad entries for this category mainly consist of bad grammar in writing, messiness in comics, and choppiness in flash.
Accuracy: This category refers to how well you adhere to your weapon’s Traits. If the traits are contradicted or forgotten, you will be judged poorly. This also applies to how well you portray your opponent’s Traits.
Creativity: The most important category and the one that will have the most affect on your score. This refers to how creative you are in utilizing your, and your opponent’s, Abilities and Traits. Creative ways of overcoming your character’s weaknesses and playing on their strengths is key.
[you]Progression[/you]
After each participant has signed up and chosen a weapon, they will be randomly paired out for VS match-ups. An entry period will be set (ex. one month). After everyone has sent in his or her entry, a judging period will begin. After the winners are chosen, the new abilities will be revealed and new match-ups will be set, starting the process over again. Losers will be eliminated from the competition, but can still participate in exhibition matches (Matches for fun!). Unlike bracket tournaments, each round’s matches will be completely randomized. As an added little wrinkle, the judges will choose two losers from each round to stay in the tournament. These "wild card" participants will be given the choice of picking a new weapon or leveling up their current one.
There are currently around 25 weapons planned. At least 22 participants are needed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So there you have it. I am currently accepting participants for registration. Below this post will be the weapons and all of their abilities, along with references for said abilities. I will also include links to the DeviantArt side of this. Hope to hear from many of you!
