zero before x1

Hey I wasnt sure where to put this, it kind of pertains to the zero and x series so if a mod wants to move it feel free.

Anyway I don't know much about what zero did before x1. I know he was created by wiley to kill x, and that he transfered his virus to sigma turning sigma into a maverick. The next thing you know he's saving x's hide from vile.

My question is why did he go after sigma first when his purpose was to kill x? Did x and zero have some battle that ended in a draw before sigma and zero fought?
Like I said, I don't know much before x1 so if anyone can help me, plz do.

actually he was created to kill megaman and X, but X was already safely buried. the rest is speculation but the closest thing we have is cataclysm by Dave Anez ( bob and george ) anyway the virus transfer was an accident, sigma forced it by breaking the crystal on Zero's head where the virus was contained.

and to answer your question, he didn't go after sigma first, he was just in a factory/cave, when sigma attacked came along and they fought. then after the virus transfer Zero became a good guy ( with no virus controlling him for now he was free. ) then sigma went maverick so zero started to hunt him from there.
